Energy Storage Options for Rail Take the Spotlight at TRAKO and Expo Ferroviaria (PHOTOS)

My recent business travels took me to Gdansk, Poland for TRAKO fair, an international fair for the rail industry that presents the state-of-the-art in transport systems and railway infrastructure. This year attendees explored an extensive exhibition space that showcased rolling stock, on-track
machines and equipment along with 700 exhibitors from 25 countries. Taking place every two years, it is the largest and most prestigious rail industry meeting in Poland and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe.
Maxwell Technologies’ business partner MCC featured Maxwell’s rail solutions. Together with MCC, Maxwell has been active in Poland’s rail market for wayside storage and onboard solutions in which integrators have built their own systems utilizing Maxwell’s broad product line including 125V heavy transportation modules, 16V and 48V modules fit for the applications. In the TRAKO fair area, there were additional solutions and products on display from our system integrators and customers.

I participated in the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers (SEP) seminar "Electrical traction without catenary-line” and presented our solutions for the railway market. This was a great opportunity to display Maxwell’s solutions, spotlight their integration in a variety of applications and share how the technology helps rail operators save on energy costs by utilizing reliable and long-life ultracapacitor technology. The other presenters included system integrators, customers who use Maxwell products and well-known influential players in the market. It was a pleasure to take part in the seminar and increase public awareness of ultracapacitors for the rail industry.
Expo Ferroviaria, a separate industry event that features railway technology,
products and systems, took place on the consecutive week in Milan, Italy. Similar to TRAKO, Maxwell exhibited with local business partner DimacReD through which Maxwell has supplied products fit for wayside solutions in the southern Europe region. DimacReD presented Maxwell’s 16V modules together with the 2.85
3400 farad DuraBlue® ultracapacitor cell.

Dimac offers custom modules for automotive, UPS and power back up solutions utilizing Maxwell cells. One product offering is the X-BOOST series which utilizes our
3000 farad cells and operates in combination with lead-acid-batteries to handle the power peaks during engine start. Ultracapacitors are used to either downsize the battery to reduce cost and system size or to extend the battery life and reduce the lifetime costs of the starter-system in total. The X-BOOST product was a hit at the show, and we enjoyed answering customer inquiries and discussing future collaborations with new partners.
