Light rail vehicles are generally propelled via electric motor assemblies. These vehicles require stable electricity provided by the grid. Light rail vehicle OEMs are starting to incorporate ultracapacitors into their designs as a form of propulsion or assisted propulsion where grid system voltage may be reduced. As these rail vehicles brake, the energy can be stored in the ultracapacitors and released during acceleration of the vehicle reducing grid electric demand, increasing vehicle performance while saving energy. The ultracapacitors can be used to increase performance of the standard vehicle by providing extra power during acceleration and can also provide power in short catenary-free zones. At present, several rail vehicle OEMs have implemented systems utilizing ultracapacitors for these types of applications.
